As the membership organization representing WI’s local health departments and boards of health, WALHDAB strongly condemns the racist violence that took the life of George Floyd last week. So many others in our country have been oppressed, maltreated, or killed due to the color of their skin. All communities, regardless of geography, are touched by racism in our state and across the country. WALHDAB condemns the systematic oppression, in any form, of people and communities of color. Systemic racism is woven into our society, and the rage, frustration and heartbreak we have seen are a result. We cannot stay silent.

Racism is reflected in inequities in resources, educational opportunities, income & employment, housing, justice reform, and other social factors. And more recently, the disproportionate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on people of color. Dismantling systemic racism, and anti-black systemic racism in particular, will require accountability, transparency and a willingness to take a hard look at our systems. We stand in solidarity with our neighbors, professionals, and colleagues of color, and we are committed to working with them to cultivate equity, inclusion and social justice.

Local health departments should work to change the public narrative from focusing on individual incidents and occurrences to discussing and addressing the legacy of racial, economic, and social oppression and injustices faced by communities of color.

WALHDAB stands united with all members of our communities, regardless of race, sexuality, gender, religion or other status to offer our support and service.
