The Senate Committee on Health and Human Services signed off on Gov. Tony Evers' pick to lead the Department of Health Services Wednesday.

Evers tapped Andrea Palm to lead the department in January. She’s served as the secretary-designee since then. Her nomination is still subject to a vote in the Senate.

The committee forwarded the nomination 4-1, with Sen. André Jacque, R-De Pere, casting the no vote.

Jacque said he has several concerns, including what he said were “conflicts of interest” mostly due to the hiring of Nicole Safar, a former vice president at Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin, as assistant deputy secretary.

Committee Chair Sen. Patrick Testin, R-Stevens Point, said Palm's qualified for the position.

“While I may not share every single viewpoint as Secretary Palm, that’s to be expected,” Testin said. “We are in divided government right now. We have a Democratic administration, and I think this is one of those cases where the secretary has shown no reason to me why she shouldn’t be confirmed.”
