Gov. Tony Evers said he’s likely to propose a “first step around medical marijuana” in his first budget.

Evers also called for a statewide referendum on legalization, adding that he would sign a bill legalizing the drug if presented with one.

“I want to make sure when and if we do legalize, and I think it’s more when than if, we have the structures in place to make it a good market and a place where small entrepreneurs can succeed,” Evers said Tuesday in response to questions at a Wisconsin Technology Council Board of Directors meeting.

Senate Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald, R-Juneau, threw cold water on the idea of medical marijuana legalization.

“I still don’t believe the support is there within the Senate caucus to move in that direction,” he told reporters Tuesday.

Still, some Republican lawmakers have expressed an openness to discussing medical marijuana legalization.
