NACCHO Statement on School Shooting in Florida

NACCHO released a statement yesterday on the school shooting this week that killed at least 17 people. NACCHO highlighted ways to prevent gun violence and the need to address it as a public health epidemic.

Yesterday, the President and Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Alex Azar made comments about the need to bolster mental health services in the wake of the shooting. In addition, at a House Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee hearing, Secretary Azar appeared to entertain the idea of expanding federal gun violence research. Azar said that a provision passed two decades ago that has been widely understood to limit research at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on gun violence only prevents it from taking an advocacy position. During questioning by Rep. Kathy Castor (D-FL), Azar committed to encouraging the study of gun violence within the department.
