Joint WPHA-WALHDAB Public Affairs Committee Conference Call Minutes

Thursday, March 23, 2006 – 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

Present: Kathy Blair, Melody Bockenfeld, Dale Hippensteel, Mary Ann Lippert, Kathy Munsey, Nancy O’Dell, Eric Ostermann, Jim Stecker, and Barb Theis.

 Meeting was called to order at 11:01 a.m. 

Legislation

bulletReview Legislative Grid –
  1. AB 881 – Public Health Modernization Act (Model Act)

·         The Governor plans to sign the bill tomorrow at the Cancer Center at UW-Madison

·         Members are encouraged to attend and should contact Liz Zelazek

 

2.  AB 450 –

Tightens absolute sobriety laws for drivers under the age of 21, increases penalties.

 

                   3.  AB907 – Elimination of the current POVD Program and implementation of new health care data

 collection.

 

4.       SB 161 – Creates a civil liability exemption for claims resulting from weight gain and obesity.

·         Governor is expected to override the bill.

 

5.       AB 414 – “Smoke Free Dining Acts

·         Tavern League has picked up some momentum on the issue.

·         A Legislative alert will be sent to the membership

 

6.       SB 35 – Child safety issue prevention on flotation devices on waterways.

·         The bill passed out of the Senate.

·         Committee members should contact Representative Huebsch to call for a roll call vote.

 

7.       TABOR Amendment – Michael Welsh asked the committee if they would like to be a part of the grassroots campaign with SAVE MA UMBRELLA.

·         Motion by Kathy Munsey seconded by Nancy O’Dell to go on record in support of the coalition.  Motion carried.

 

Other Issues

  1. Eric Ostermann reported that there were two resolutions that would be voted on at the Annual Conference.

 

  1. APHA – Eric informed the committee that more legislative alerts will be send out on Federal issues as they come up.

  1. Next meeting will be on Thursday, April 27th, 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m.
